Summary

Return to Tokyo for a royal wedding in Emiko Jean's Tokyo Dreaming, the sequel to the Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick and New York Times bestseller Tokyo Ever After

When Japanese-American Izumi Tanaka learned her father was the Crown Prince of Japan, she became a princess overnight。 Now, she’s overcome conniving cousins, salacious press, and an imperial scandal to finally find a place she belongs。 She has a perfect bodyguard turned boyfriend。 Her stinky dog, Tamagotchi, is living with her in Tokyo。 Her parents have even rekindled their college romance and are engaged。 A royal wedding is on the horizon! Izumi’s life is a Tokyo dream come true。 Only。。。

Her parents’ engagement hits a brick wall。 The Imperial Household Council refuses to approve the marriage citing concerns about Izumi and her mother’s lack of pedigree。 And on top of it all, her bodyguard turned boyfriend makes a shocking decision about their relationship。 At the threat of everything falling apart, Izumi vows to do whatever it takes to help win over the council。 Which means upping her newly acquired princess game。

But at what cost? Izumi will do anything to help her parents achieve their happily ever after, but what if playing the perfect princess means sacrificing her own? Will she find a way to forge her own path and follow her heart?

This was so, so lovely!! It was a great extension of Jean’s first book, Tokyo Ever After。 I read the first book maybe a year ago, but was able to pick this back up without a problem。 I loved some of the new characters and relationships, especially the twins and Eriku! I liked the direction the ending took, it was predictable but still really good :)

This is the second book in the Tokyo Ever After series, and while it can be read as a standalone, you will enjoy it much more if you read the first book Tokyo Ever After to get the background。 We start right where we left off, Izumi and her mother are living in Tokyo and her parents become engaged, but the council in charge of approving her parents' wedding are concerned about the match。 Izumi is wondering where life will lead her next, and as her relationship with Akio takes an unexpected turn, This is the second book in the Tokyo Ever After series, and while it can be read as a standalone, you will enjoy it much more if you read the first book Tokyo Ever After to get the background。 We start right where we left off, Izumi and her mother are living in Tokyo and her parents become engaged, but the council in charge of approving her parents' wedding are concerned about the match。 Izumi is wondering where life will lead her next, and as her relationship with Akio takes an unexpected turn, she decides to make some big changes to help her parents。This is an entertaining YA book about sacrifices and whether or not they are necessary。 I felt for Izumi, as she feels responsible for facilitating the happiness and success of her parents and their relationship。 I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator is superb。 She personifies the characters and her Japanese is flawless, which kept me invested in the story as I was listening to the words rather than tripping over them while reading。 This book has shades of The Princess Diaries, but it's more up to date with modern dilemmas and decisions, and the situations feel very real。 I loved reading about the different customs and traditions (as well as a laundry list of dos and don'ts) for the royal family。 I definitely recommend both books in this series。 I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own。 。。。more

Like with the first book, I prefer the US (top) cover。 It's cartoony, but the UK image shows Izzy as an airhead, and that's just not true。This is the second in a series that has been described as the Japanese Princess Diaries。 (Amusingly, that series gets a name check in this volume。) The first volume was fluffy and light; this one goes a bit deeper, ruminating on whether it's better to subsume oneself in duty and love for your country, or whether you should puch for personal happiness: whether Like with the first book, I prefer the US (top) cover。 It's cartoony, but the UK image shows Izzy as an airhead, and that's just not true。This is the second in a series that has been described as the Japanese Princess Diaries。 (Amusingly, that series gets a name check in this volume。) The first volume was fluffy and light; this one goes a bit deeper, ruminating on whether it's better to subsume oneself in duty and love for your country, or whether you should puch for personal happiness: whether it's better to have a partner who compliments you in every way or one who pushes and challenges you。 There's plenty to chew on here。Either there's less cultural stuff in this volume, or I've become more familiar with it since the last book。 That might be reflective of Izzy's growing comfort with Japanese culture and customs。I did think the resolution to the Shining Twins plotline was a little obvious, but there's nothing wrong with obvious, and it suited the tone of the story well。I'm looking forward to reading more in this series when the next volume comes out。 。。。more

TOKYO DREAMING picks up Izumi’s story almost immediately where we left her in the previous book。 Her mom and dad are starting to pick their relationship back up。 She is feeling more comfortable with the different customs expected of her。 And her relationship with Akio, her once bodyguard turned boyfriend, could not be better。 Izumi is under some pressure to decide what she is going to do for school。 She’d like to take a gap year but she is expected to pick a college — the sooner, the better。 Izumi learns that her parents might not be able to get married as they would like, as the Imperial Household Council has concerns about both Izumi and her mother。 Izumi, wanting her parents to be together, decides to take matters into her own hands。 She will make sure to do whatever it takes to see her parents married and happy。 Overall, I really enjoyed this story。 I loved getting to see more of Izumi’s mother, Hanako。 I really loved the discussion of friendship and how that can change once you go separate ways, like to different colleges/countries。 I also loved learning more about her twin cousins and the different ways their relationship changed throughout。I felt that Izumi really blossomed as a character during this story overall。 There was a trope that I am not the biggest fan of that appears in a lot of YA fiction, but I felt like it was handled incredibly well。 I felt the ending was a little rushed, but I also maybe just didn’t want the story to end。While I enjoyed it, though, I definitely prefer TOKYO EVER AFTER more。 I do hope that there will be at least a third book in this series。 I think that a third book would really complete Izumi’s story — and I am also just selfish and want to read more。Many thanks to @netgalley and @macmillan。audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review。 This books will be published May 31st! 。。。more

It was a treat to return to Tokyo and check in on Izumi。 I thought the first book in this series was amazing, so the sequel had huge shoes to fill。 Listening to this one on audio was definitely the right choice。 Ali Ahn strikes just the right notes as a narrator。 For Izumi, her highest priority is to have her mom and dad together so they can be an intact family。 As the powers that be let their expectations be known, she finds herself make more and more compromises。 Is she making these decisions It was a treat to return to Tokyo and check in on Izumi。 I thought the first book in this series was amazing, so the sequel had huge shoes to fill。 Listening to this one on audio was definitely the right choice。 Ali Ahn strikes just the right notes as a narrator。 For Izumi, her highest priority is to have her mom and dad together so they can be an intact family。 As the powers that be let their expectations be known, she finds herself make more and more compromises。 Is she making these decisions for the right reasons? Or will she lose herself in the process? This was a delightful second chapter in the Tokyo Ever After series。 A fantastic read for AAPI Heritage Month and a marvelous way to get a royal fix。 * Review by Darla from Red Bridge * 。。。more
